The Magic of Strings

''The Magic of Strings'' by Rakhat-Bi Abdyssagin particularly fascinated me. It is a work musically rich in atmosphere and suggestions and written with a deep knowledge of the technique and instrumental characteristics of the violin. In his essentially monodic writing, typical of the instrument, the polyphony implicit in the piece is perceived from the first notes, each voice characterized by a different affect. These voices, at first on a close register, gradually separate in height, the horizontal polyphony becomes vertical and the writing more and more intense and virtuosistic with the addiction of double notes. The continuous passage between high and low register also adds to the tonal richness an element of theatricality that makes the work extremely communicative. In the finale all the voices finally come together and sing homorhythmically.
