CD-Tipp: Elizaveta Birjukova: obvius - Werke von G. Ph. Telemann, Ch. Seither, S.Karg-Elert, G. Iranyi, C. Halffter, G. Pritchard, T. Takemitsu, Y. Inamori

"British composer Gwyn Pritchard was born in Yorkshire in 1948, He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Uroboros Ensemble and has developed a strong international reputation for his work. This Intermezzo for solo flute is around four and a half minutes long. It was written in 1992 but did not receive its first performance until ten years later, when Nancy Ruffer performed it in London. This edition by the Verlag Neue Musik in Berlin is beautifully presented, with versions for B or C foot included within the same edition, and this piece deserves a place in the flute’s contemporary repertoire. The music is full of colour, contrast and expression; the piece uses a wide dynamic range and there are opportunities throughout for imaginative use of colour. There are technical demands too, but much of the development of the melodic lines moves freely between slow and fast material; many of the faster notes are in fact creating a sense of surface texture while the underlying melodic direction moves at a slower pace. This sense of the music working on multiple levels simultaneously is achieved without overcomplicating the material, and the expression never suffers. This is very much a piece with a meaning which has much to offer both the player and the listener. This is an excellent recital piece which is within technical reach of undergraduate students; this would be an ideal addition to university recital programmes or professional recitals."
